Lying below glitzy Courchevel 1850, at an altitude of 1,550 metres (hence the name), Courchevel 1550 is smaller and quieter than its counterparts. However, its location is ideal if you're looking for access to the entire Trois Vallées region while avoiding the crowds and high prices of Courchevel 1850.

Located in the Tarentaise Valley, Courchevel 1550 ski resort is nestled below the bright lights of Courchevel 1850. The resort is popular with families as it tends to be a lot quieter than the other Courchevel villages, yet you can reach 1850 in less than five minutes via the Grangettes gondola. The gondola stays open throughout the evening so you can still enjoy the lively nightlife higher up the valley before returning to the sanctuary of your luxury chalet in Courchevel 1550 at the end of the evening.

The five villages of Courchevel are also connected by regular free shuttle services in the winter and the summer. In winter, the bus service runs every 30 minutes from 07:00 am until 02:00 am the following morning.

The village is home to several bars and restaurants where skiers can unwind after a day on the slopes, offering a more laid-back experience than the exclusive nightclubs and bars found at 1850.

Courchevel 1550 provides access to the incredible skiing that Courchevel is renowned for. While it may not have the high-end glamour of Courchevel 1850, its skiing facilities are equally impressive, and arguably more convenient for families and beginner to intermediate skiers. The main meeting point for ski schools in Courchevel 1550 is at the base of the high-speed Grangettes gondola which whisks you up to La Croisette in Courchevel 1850 in a matter of minutes. Another option for reaching Courchevel 1850 is the more leisurely Tovets six-man chairlift.

Courchevel 1550 also offers fun activities for children beyond skiing. The toboggan run that starts in Courchevel 1850 and winds down into Courchevel 1550 is a hit with children and adults alike. It's a 2 km exhilarating ride, and thanks to its floodlit track, it’s open into the evening, adding extra adventure after sunset.

Despite its quieter nature, 1550 benefits from a highly efficient lift system, giving you rapid access to Courchevel 1850 and the extensive main ski area in just one lift. The ski area directly served by Courchevel 1550 is relatively small, but the resort’s main appeal lies in its quick access to 1850, rather than its own pistes.

There are two main lifts in Courchevel 1550: the Grangettes gondola, which provides a direct link to La Croisette in Courchevel 1850, and the Tovets chairlift, from where you can ski down to the Plantrey lift thereby avoiding all the early morning queues at the main lift station in 1850.

While 1550 has a small selection of its own runs, most skiers staying here opt to use the resort’s excellent lift links to explore the wider Three Valleys ski area. To reach Courchevel Le Praz, take the Tovets chairlift out of 1550, then follow either the Amoureux or Brigues red pistes down into the resort centre. To access Courchevel 1650, take the Grangettes gondola up to 1850. From there, jump on the Jardin Alpin gondola and ski down to the Biollay chairlift. Follow the blue Pralong and Prameruel pistes to the Roc Mugnier chairlift, and from the top, you can ski directly into Courchevel 1650.

For beginners and children, the Roys lift provides free access to a small green piste, perfect for building confidence. Additionally, the Grangettes gondola offers access to the children’s ski areas in Courchevel 1850. At the end of the day, if you'd rather not ski back down, you can always take the gondola back to Courchevel 1550.

Although there aren’t a huge number of restaurants in the centre of Courchevel 1550, the quality is still high. A must-visit restaurant in Courchevel 1550 for meat lovers is L’Oeil de Boeuf. Located on the main high street at the foot of the Tovets piste, this intimate Savoyard restaurant specialises in meats grilled over an open fire.

Also boasting a rustic Savoyard setting, Le Caveau serves typical Savoie specialities such as fondue, tartiflette and regional escargots. Don’t miss out on the “Sweet Corner” with its selection of homemade pastries, sorbets and crème brulée to finish your meal.

Serving a wide variety of mouth-watering pizzas made in traditional ovens, La Corto is another fantastic option. It also does take away, as does La Chapelle which provides feel-good mountain cuisine. Another favourite of ours is Le Grill at the Ecrin Blanc hotel next to the Grandes Combes chairlift which offers local classics such as cheese fondue, pasta and burgers.

One of the most popular restaurants in Courchevel 1550 is La Table des Flocons, an ideal lunch spot right next to the piste and ski school meeting point. Part of a family-run hotel, enjoy delicious Savoyard cuisine in the cosy interior or on the sun terrace.

When it comes to apres ski, Courchevel 1850 has a much livelier scene. However, in 1550 Le Caterail Bar is popular with locals with a big screen showing sporting events, an extensive vodka and cocktail menu and live music every Thursday evening from 10:00 pm.

Courchevel 1550 has plenty to offer visitors who want to take a break from skiing or non-skiers who want to experience the mountains in different ways.

The Aquamotion Centre, located just below 1550, is one of the largest and most impressive aquatic centres in the Alps. It features indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, water slides, and even a surf wave, providing hours of fun and relaxation for the entire family.

If you love winter walking, Courchevel 1550 offers beautiful snowshoeing and hiking trails. With well-marked routes leading into the surrounding forests and up into the mountains, it’s a wonderful way to take in the natural beauty of the area at a slower pace.

There's also a fantastic tobogganing course starting from Courchevel 1850. Climb aboard your toboggan and challenge your friends to a 2 km course through snow-covered fir trees to Courchevel Village.

Popular events in the valley include the Alpine Ski World Cup in January and the International Festival of Pyrotechnic Art, which lights up the villages with spectacular displays during February and March.

Whilst it may not be your first thought when it comes to planning a summer holiday, Courchevel 1550 is in fact the perfect destination to keep your children entertained. There are a wealth of activities on offer for all ages and members of the family, from horse riding and short hikes to high ropes courses, swimming, nature parks and more.

Courchevel is also a mecca for mountain biking with the whole of the mountain area to explore. An angler’s haven, Courchevel has seven designated fishing sites with Lac du Praz and Lac de la Rosiere being the most popular spots.

How to get to Courchevel 1550

The closest major airport to Courchevel 1550 is Geneva International Airport, located around 140 kilometres away. From the airport, a road transfer can take you to Courchevel 1550 in about two and a half hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions.

Another option is Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport, which is approximately 180 kilometres from Courchevel and offers a similar transfer time. There are numerous private shuttle services, buses, and taxis available from both airports, as well as the possibility to rent a car. Chambery Airport, though smaller, is also a nearby option, around 110 kilometres away, and offers some seasonal flights during the winter months.

Travelling by train is another convenient way to reach Courchevel 1550. The nearest major train station is in Moûtiers, around 25 kilometres from Courchevel. High-speed TGV trains from Paris and other French cities frequently arrive at Moûtiers. From there, you can take a taxi or hop on a regular bus service that operates between Moûtiers and Courchevel. The journey up the mountain to Courchevel 1550 takes about 20-30 minutes.

By road, Courchevel 1550 is easily accessible via the French motorway system. From major cities like Paris or Lyon, you can take the A43 motorway towards Albertville. From Albertville, continue on the N90 road to Moûtiers. Once you reach Moûtiers, follow the signs to Courchevel and drive up the D915 mountain road, which will lead you directly to Courchevel 1550. The journey offers scenic views as you ascend into the heart of the Alps. In winter, it’s advisable to check the weather conditions and ensure your car is equipped with snow tyres or chains, as the mountain roads can become icy.
