Luxury Chalets in Kiroro

Kiroro ski resort is located just 90 minutes from Sapporo, making it one of the more accessible ski resorts in Japan. The resort is small with only a few hotels to choose from. However, you'll find more accommodation in Otaru, around 30 minutes away.

If you are looking to stay in the ski area, we recommend staying at Yu Kiroro, based less than 100 metres from the Gateway Express gondola with ski-in / ski-out access. With a private 3-bed deluxe or 3-bed superior apartment, you will have access to the Yu Kiroro hotel facilities which include a ski valet service, Kids Space, a 24-hour gym equipped with free-weights, treadmills and exercise bikes and a shared onsen which can be booked for private use. You can also enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at the excellent Yukashi Restaurant.

Take a trip to Yoichi district and you’ll find Kiroro, a charming area that receives 21 metres of snowfall per year on average. Claiming to have some of the best powder conditions in Hokkaido, Kiroro is home to a plethora of groomed trails and off-pistes terrains.

With an annual snowfall of around 21 metres, Kiroro ski resort offers some of the deepest and lightest powder snow in the world. Skiers and snowboarders from across the globe flock to Kiroro for the pristine conditions, but the resort remains refreshingly quiet compared to other Hokkaido resorts like Niseko. This makes it an ideal destination for those looking for a more relaxed and serene skiing experience, where the focus is squarely on enjoying the incredible snow and stunning landscapes.

The ski area at Kiroro is spread across two main peaks, Asari and Nagamine, offering an impressive variety of runs for all abilities.

The resort features 23 marked trails, covering over 1,100 acres of terrain, with elevations reaching up to 1,180 metres. What truly sets Kiroro skiing apart is the quality of its snow – deep, fluffy powder that remains largely untouched, thanks to the resort’s relative lack of crowds.

There is much more to Kiroro than just skiing. The resort has plenty of alternative activities to enjoy from the new winter sport of snow drive to snow rafting, snowcat sightseeing tours and the hot spring at Kiroro Onsen. With two high-speed gondolas and eight chairlifts providing easy access to some of the best snow in Japan, Kiroro resort is quickly becoming recognised as Hokkaido’s premier powder ski destination.

Beginners will find ample space to hone their skills, with wide, gentle slopes at the base of the mountain and dedicated beginner areas serviced by magic carpets.

Intermediate skiers will enjoy the long, winding runs that span both peaks, with plenty of opportunities to explore the trees and discover hidden powder stashes. Advanced skiers and snowboarders can venture into Kiroro’s famed off-piste terrain, with plenty of backcountry access available through the resort’s official powder zones.

For the truly adventurous, Kiroro offers guided backcountry tours and cat-skiing experiences, allowing skiers to explore some of the most remote and untouched areas of the mountain.

Best Bars & Restaurants in Kiroro

For a smaller resort, Kiroro still has some fantastic dining options. Located near the gondola base station, Brasserie Akaigawa is an excellent choice for lunch after a morning on the slopes. Cafeteria Lumiere is another good option with a set menu and Hokkaido-only Sapporo Classic Lager, wines and non-alcoholic beer. If you are looking for a little more exclusivity you can pay to upgrade to 'The Lounge', which offers a view of the ski slopes from a semi-private room and a salad/soup/drinks bar included in the price.

You won’t have to travel far to find luxury dining as the Hotel Yu Kiroro has one of the finest restaurants in town, Yukashi. Yukashi offers a premium Hokkaido dining experience, using local and seasonal ingredients.

Whilst there isn’t a huge amount of nightlife in Kiroro the hotel bars provide the perfect venue for a sophisticated cocktail or sake.

If you're looking to venture further afield, nearby towns such as Otaru offer additional dining options, including fresh seafood restaurants and traditional izakayas where you can enjoy authentic Japanese fare.

Kiroro’s appeal extends beyond skiing, with a wide range of winter activities to enjoy. Families will love the snow park, where children can play in the snow, ride on snow bikes, or try tubing down specially designed tracks. For a more serene experience, the resort offers snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, allowing visitors to explore the stunning winter landscape at a slower pace.

There’s also snowmobiling and ice fishing available if you're seeking a bit more adrenaline.

Further afield, you can tour the local wineries and distilleries, explore the delights of Yoichi, a town famous for its seafood, whiskey and wine, or discover one of Japan’s most stunning portside towns, Otaru. Just 30 minutes from Yu Kiroro, you can explore the local market, enjoy fresh seafood and visit the Otaru Taishou Glass Palace.

How to get to Kiroro

Kiroro Ski Resort is easily accessible from several major transport hubs. The nearest airport is New Chitose Airport in Sapporo, which offers direct flights from many international destinations. From the airport, it’s a 90-minute drive to the resort, with shuttle buses and private transfers readily available.

Alternatively, you can take a train to nearby Otaru Station and then transfer to a shuttle or taxi for the short journey to the resort.

If you're travelling from Tokyo or other parts of Japan, high-speed rail and domestic flights to Sapporo are the most efficient options. Once you arrive at Kiroro, the resort’s convenient layout means you’ll never be far from the slopes or your accommodation, making it a seamless experience from start to finish.
