Gstaad is the perfect destination for an old-school ski trip. It's the original alpine elegance. Julie Andrews (who knows a little something about favourite things) calls Gstaad “the last paradise in a crazy world.

Luxury Ski Holidays in Gstaad

Julie Andrews once called Gstaad the “last paradise in a crazy world,” and honestly, it’s hard to argue with that! This luxurious Alpine gem has a charm that goes way beyond its reputation as a playground for the rich and famous. Yes, it’s where royalty and celebs come to unwind, but Gstaad is so much more than just glitz and glamour—it’s a place where authentic Alpine life still thrives, and everyone is made to feel right at home.

Nestled in the beautiful Bernese Alps, Gstaad is remarkably easy to get to. If you're coming from Geneva, it's just a leisurely two-hour drive—perfect for a long weekend away. But if you’re looking to make the journey as special as the destination, hop on the iconic Golden Pass train route. Whether you choose the sleek, modern Panoramic train or the elegant Belle Epoch carriages, the views are simply breathtaking. You’ll find yourself gliding past Lake Geneva, with its vineyards and picturesque countryside, offering a truly scenic introduction to your Alpine escape.

One of the most charming things about Gstaad is how it has managed to keep its traditional Alpine feel despite its luxurious reputation. It’s still very much a place where mountain life is embraced. The region boasts over 200 working farms and around 7,000 cows—that’s almost one cow per local! This blend of rural authenticity and understated luxury is what really makes Gstaad special. It’s a village where old-school charm meets world-class hospitality.

The charm of Gstaad is hard to put into words. I love sitting outside Charly’s tea room with a hot chocolate in winter and watching the figure skaters practise their routines on the ice rink.

How high is Gstaad?

The main village is situated at an altitude of 1,050 metres above sea level, while the other villages that make up Gstaad range from 1,000 to 1,400 metres. Skiing in the area varies in elevation from 1,050 metres to 3,016 metres at Glacier 3000.

How do I get to Gstaad?

Gstaad is easily accessible from both Bern (one hour and 20 minutes) and Geneva airports (two hours), while private jets and helicopters can land in Saanen, just six and a half kilometres away. If you would prefer to travel by train, the famous GoldenPass railway line offers stunning views of Alpine valleys and mountains.

What is the snow like in Gstaad?

Unlike many other European ski resorts, Gstaad was not purpose-built and, as a result, sits at a relatively low altitude. However, it provides access to fantastic elevations, including excellent glacier skiing at Glacier 3000. Snow cover in the lower areas is supplemented by 730 snow cannons.

Is Gstaad suitable for beginners?

With 60% of terrain graded as easy, Gstaad is an excellent option for beginners, offering wide open trails to explore. There are excellent beginner areas throughout the ski area, including Wispile (near the Rütti and Zückerli lifts) and Eggli (at the valley station of the Rübeldorf chairlift), along with a number of ski schools.

Is Gstaad a family-friendly ski resort?

Gstaad offers a range of childcare options, ski schools and children’s activities, making it an ideal resort for families. A highlight for young children is the Sound Piste, where you can create a variety of sounds using ski poles and snowballs on objects such as milk churns and cowbells as you ski. There are also plenty of gentle blue runs for families wishing to ski together.

What activities for non-skiers are there in Gstaad?

Whether it’s winter biking, ice skating or dog sledging, non-skiers will never get bored in Gstaad. You can experience the longest peak-to-peak suspension bridge in the world, the Peak Walk by Tissot. For a cultural experience, visit the Saanen Landscape Museum.
