Developed in the 1980s, Beaver Creek in Colorado is an exclusive ski resort just 16 km west of Vail. The resort offers over 1,800 acres of varied terrain, catering to all levels. Families, in particular, are well taken care of, with excellent ski schools, dedicated beginner areas, and thoughtful touches like the famous free cookies handed out at the base each afternoon.
The village itself exudes a low-key, elegant charm, with heated walkways, fine dining options, and upscale accommodation. However, if you're seeking a vibrant après-ski nightlife, Beaver Creek’s scene is more subdued than larger resorts like Aspen or Vail.
The ski terrain in Beaver Creek is ideal for all levels of skiers. For beginners, there are plenty of easy slopes in the upper areas with suitable slopes from the mountain back down into the village. At Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead Mountain, beginners can practise their technique and turns on wide easy slopes and there is a practice area at the Buckaroo Express Gondola.
For advanced skiers, Beaver Creek has a handful of challenging runs, most notably the Birds of Prey World Cup downhill course, but the resort is generally more tailored to intermediates and families. More experienced skiers looking for extensive off-piste options might find neighbouring Vail more to their taste, and it’s just a 20-minute drive away.
Aside from downhill skiing, visitors can try cross-country skiing, telemark skiing or snowshoeing. Several signature events take place throughout the year, from World Cup competitions to culinary weekends, music festivals and rodeos. Located in the middle of the village, the ice rink provides hours of fun with skate rental available at the booth located next to Base Mountain Sports.
The resort consists of three main villages: Beaver Creek Village, Bachelor Gulch, and Arrowhead, each with its own character and appeal. Accommodation options range from lavish ski-in/ski-out hotels to cosy chalets and private residences, catering to a wide array of preferences while maintaining the high standards the area is renowned for.
Beaver Creek Village is the vibrant heart of the resort, characterised by its pedestrian-friendly cobblestone streets and European-inspired architecture. Staying here places you at the centre of activity, with upscale boutiques, fine dining establishments, and lively après-ski spots steps away. Accommodation in Beaver Creek village exudes sophistication, with luxurious options like The Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa offering five-star amenities, direct access to the slopes, and indulgent spa services.
For a more tranquil and exclusive experience, Bachelor Gulch is an excellent choice. Known for its luxurious, secluded atmosphere, the village is home to high-end lodges and private residences nestled amidst towering evergreens. The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, is a standout property, offering ski-in/ski-out access, a world-class spa, and stunning mountain views. This area particularly appeals to families and couples seeking a serene retreat without sacrificing proximity to the slopes. The interconnectivity of Beaver Creek’s villages means you’re never far from the action, even in this quieter enclave.
Arrowhead, the westernmost village, provides a more understated yet equally refined experience. It’s perfect for those who value privacy and a more residential feel while still enjoying access to the vast ski terrain. Accommodation here typically includes luxurious private homes and condominiums with spacious interiors, making it a popular choice for larger groups or families. The village is also connected to the main resort by a series of ski runs, ensuring convenience for skiers of all levels.
