Nestled in the Austrian Alps, the Zillertal Valley is a top ski destination with stunning scenery, diverse slopes, and charming alpine villages. The Zillertal ski area comprises multiple resorts, each offering something unique for every type of skier, whether you’re a beginner, expert, family, or adventure-seeker.

Luxury Ski Chalets in Zillertal

The valley towns within Zillertal offer a charming blend of traditional Austrian architecture, cosy accommodation, and welcoming locals. You’ll find a range of options from luxury hotels to charming family-owned chalets, as well as lodges and budget-friendly hostels for those looking to experience the area without breaking the bank. Each town has its own personality, with Mayrhofen standing out for its bustling après-ski scene, while Hochfügen offers a more relaxed, family-focused vibe.

Located in the namesake Alps, Zillertal is the second-widest valley in Austria’s Tyrol region. It puts its size to good use: landscapes range from lakes to sky-high peaks, from green meadows to the mighty Hintertux Glacier — the country's only year-round ski resort. The area’s diversity extends to its experiences, whether you're travelling with your family or looking for adrenaline-fuelled fun, and culinary offerings, with plenty of places to fuel up for an adventure.

Luxury Ski Holidays in Zillertal

The valley is home to four main ski areas: Hochzillertal-Hochfügen-Spieljoch, Zillertal Arena, Mayrhofen, and Hintertux Glacier. Each area is connected by efficient ski lifts and offers a variety of slopes and après-ski options, making Zillertal a versatile and expansive destination for winter sports enthusiasts.

Hochzillertal-Hochfügen-Spieljoch is often the first choice for visitors due to its excellent snow conditions, even at lower altitudes, and extensive terrain that’s suitable for all levels. The small village of Kaltenbach is the main hub, offering traditional Austrian charm along with ski-in/ski-out accommodation. Spieljoch, meanwhile, is a bit smaller and family-oriented, making it ideal for beginners or those seeking a quieter ski experience.

Zillertal Arena, one of Austria’s largest ski resorts, spans 143 kilometres across several villages, including Zell am Ziller and Gerlos. Zell am Ziller is a quaint, picturesque town with a lively yet relaxed vibe, while Gerlos is popular with those looking for a lively après-ski scene.

I love Zillertal for its diversity—it truly has something for everyone, from beginners to seasoned skiers. Each resort has its own unique charm; Mayrhofen is perfect for vibrant après-ski, while the high-altitude slopes of Hintertux Glacier offer guaranteed snow even into spring. The valley’s villages still feel authentically Austrian too.
