Nestled at the foot of the iconic Matterhorn, Zermatt is a year-round destination known for its breathtaking views, alpine charm, and endless outdoor adventures. While Zermatt is famous for its winter skiing, summer in Zermatt offers a whole new experience, perfect for those seeking outdoor activities in a stunning mountain setting. Whether you're an adventure seeker or someone looking for a relaxing escape in the Swiss Alps, Zermatt summer holidays have something for everyone. Here are our top five things to do in Zermatt in summer.

1. Summer Skiing on the Matterhorn Glacier

When you think of Zermatt, summer skiing may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but this alpine gem offers skiing and snowboarding at altitudes above 3,800 metres on the Matterhorn Glacier. The resort boasts one of the highest summer ski areas in Europe, with over 20 kilometres of slopes open to skiers and snowboarders throughout the warmer months. Zermatt summer skiing is perfect for those looking to extend their ski season or those who want to experience the thrill of skiing with views of the Matterhorn towering in the distance.

Whilst we wouldn't recommend visiting Zermatt in summer just to ski, it is perfect for a morning's entertainment. We recommend starting early, as the snow starts to deteriorate throughout the morning under the strong sun. The summer ski area closes at midday to ensure conditions hold up for the following day. Freestyle fans have access to the Zermatt Summer Snowpark, and ski schools have summer offers available too.

2. Hiking and Trekking in the Swiss Alps

If skiing isn't on your agenda, hiking and trekking in Zermatt in summer are among the most popular activities. With over 400 kilometres of marked trails, there's a route for every level of hiker. For breathtaking views and an unforgettable alpine experience, take the Matterhorn Glacier Trail, which offers panoramic vistas of the Matterhorn and surrounding peaks. Another fantastic option is the 5-Seenweg (Five Lakes Walk), where you'll pass five pristine mountain lakes that reflect the image of the Matterhorn—perfect for photography enthusiasts.

Zermatt has diverse flora and fauna and a variety of wildlife to spot, from whistling marmots to chamois and ibex. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a golden eagle.

Gastronomy enthusiasts can indulge in the Gourmet Trail, a delightful journey starting at Sunnegga and winding through the picturesque hamlet of Findeln to Ried. Along the way, you'll stop at several Zermatt mountain restaurants, with the eateries in Findeln alone earning a combined total of 42 Gault Millau points. Purchase the Gourmet Pass to enjoy a four-course meal at top spots like @Paradise and Chez Vrony, making for a truly unforgettable culinary experience.

For more experienced hikers, the Haute Route is a challenging multi-day trek that connects Zermatt to Chamonix. This iconic route takes you through rugged terrain, lush valleys, and high mountain passes, all while offering stunning views of the Alps.

3. Take a Cable Car to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

No trip to Zermatt in summer would be complete without a visit to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. This is the highest cable car station in Europe, sitting at 3,883 metres above sea level. From here, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Matterhorn and other peaks in the Pennine Alps. The station also features an ice palace, where you can explore beautiful ice sculptures and enjoy a unique experience inside the glacier itself.

For those seeking a more relaxing experience, there are plenty of viewpoints from which you can take in the sweeping alpine vistas, making it an ideal destination for couples, families, and anyone looking to appreciate the beauty of summer in Zermatt.

For more breathtaking views, take Europe’s highest open-air cog railway from Zermatt station to the Gornergrat at 3,089 meters (10,135 feet). The 33-minute journey will reward you with one of the finest panoramas in the world, featuring 29 peaks over 4,000 metres, from the Monte Rosa massif to the Gorner Glacier, the second largest in the Alps.

Whether you're into downhill biking or cross-country adventures, there's a route suited to your level.

For first-timers, we recommend the Glacier Garden Loop or 4 Lakes Bike Tour. For those more technically accomplished, the Blauherd-Sunnegga trail and Furi-Schwarzee Bike Tour will provide you with a challenge.

To get the most out of mountain biking in Zermatt, there are a variety of bike schools and guides to choose from. E-biking is also popular, particularly with families and beginners.
