Supercar Driving Tour through the Swiss Alps

Just under an hour’s drive from Zurich will bring you to the picturesque town of Lucerne. Take the opportunity to stretch your legs around the shores of Lake Lucerne and admire the medieval Chapel Bridge which is considered to be one of the oldest, covered wooden bridges in Europe. You can also enjoy some culture at the Sammlung Rosengart Museum which comprises one of the greatest private collections of 20th-century art, including more than 100 paintings by Picasso, as well as dozens more by Klee and Matisse.

From Lucerne, it is an hour and a half’s drive, through picture-perfect villages and farmlands to Grindelwald.

An interesting stop on this part of the journey is Meiringen. Famous as the birthplace of meringues and for the ‘death’ of Sherlock Holmes. Walk or take the funicular up to the Reichenbach Falls where Holmes plunged to his death, only to be resurrected three years later. Back in the car and from here it is a steady climb, past the retreating Stein Glacier to the beginning of the Susten Pass. Down at Wassen (916m) make sure you take the old road south, not the motorway, for a more scenic route.

Susten Pass - described by some as a prince among mountain passes, Susten is part of what is collectively referred to as the “Big 3” passes. Completed in 1945, this was the first road to be built specifically for cars. Regarded as one of the most beautiful roads in Europe, the pass is full of variety, incorporating sweeping valley roads, amazing uninterrupted views, and switchbacks which take you to the summit of the pass at 2224m

When Porsche launched a special limited edition of their evergreen 911 sports car in 2016, they used the Susten pass for the promotional video.

Depending on what time you arrive in Andermatt, this quaint village has a lot to offer. Explore its amazing heights on bike or hop onto the Furka steam train on your way to the Rhone glacier. Golfers can take on the challenge of the Kurt Rossknecht designed 18-hole par 72 championship course.

STAY: The Chedi, Andermatt ( 1 night)

Furka Pass - immortalised by the Aston DB5 / Ford Mustang car chase in James Bond’s Goldfinger, this stunning pass is another of the “Big 3” passes. This dramatic road rising 2,429m above sea level, provides both challenging driving and some of the world’s most breathtaking views.

The route will take you past the Binntal Landscape Park and Grengiols, home to a unique wild tulip that can only found in the village and on the surrounding slopes. You will pass through the larger town of Brig, home to Stockalper Palace which is one of the most important baroque palaces in Switzerland, and Sion, the capital of the Canton of Valais with an important 7,000-year history, charming old town, vineyards and castles.

STAY: No. 14, Verbier (3 nights)
